Forgetting why you walked into a room, or losing a word mid-sentence, gets written off as just "getting older." The research connecting muscle strength to brain function suggests there's more you can do about it than that framing implies.
The strength–cognition link is well documented
A review published in European Review of Aging and Physical Activity found that during aging, declines in muscular strength — particularly in the lower limbs — are consistently linked to poorer cognitive performance, alongside structural brain changes like hippocampal shrinkage (Herold et al., 2019).
Direct evidence from controlled trials
A study of elderly women published in Clinical Interventions in Aging put participants through a 12-week resistance training program and measured both physical and cognitive outcomes. The trained group showed measurable improvements in cognitive capacity compared to controls, alongside gains in physical fitness (Smolarek et al., 2016).
What the mechanism looks like
Part of the proposed explanation involves acute and chronic neurobiological changes triggered by resistance exercise — including effects on brain-derived neurotrophic factor and other growth signals released during muscular loading, which are thought to support neural health and preservation of cognitive function during aging (Herold et al., 2019).
The structural brain changes behind it
The same review found that resistance exercise — not only cardiovascular exercise — is associated with structural brain benefits during aging, including compensatory changes in brain activity and reduced shrinkage of the hippocampus, a region central to memory formation (Herold et al., 2019).
The dose still matters
Researchers note that the optimal training dose — intensity, frequency, and duration — for cognitive benefits specifically is still being refined. But the consistent theme across this body of research is that resistance training, done consistently, is associated with better cognitive outcomes than inactivity (Herold et al., 2019; Smolarek et al., 2016).
